Chapter 23 in Decoding the Market, 2025, pp 231-240 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter examines the role of gold as a strategic asset within the global financial system. It analyzes gold’s historical trajectory from a monetary base under the gold standard to a modern reserve asset and investment vehicle. The analysis focuses on the drivers of gold price cycles, identifying macroeconomic conditions, monetary policy shifts, and geopolitical risks as key factors. Furthermore, the chapter explores the evolving rationale for holding gold, emphasizing its functions in portfolio diversification, hedging against inflation and systemic risk, and its strategic importance in central bank reserves. The conclusion affirms gold’s continued relevance as a non-sovereign asset that provides stability in an environment of financial uncertainty.
