A chapter in Operations Research Proceedings 2017, 2018, pp 753-758 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The goal of this presentation is to show how schedule adjustments based on plan-actual-comparisons improve on time performance, to point out limitations for the practical implementation and discuss further enhancements using metaheuristic algorithms for network optimization. The effect of the schedule adjustment is calculated using the movement data for the long-distance railway network for Deutsche Bahn for a full year (2014). The extent of the plan changes is determined by the cost of operation and the (opportunity) cost for delays.
