Abstract:
Abstract Eco-innovation offers significant potential for promoting sustainable development by tackling environmental challenges, while simultaneously creating new economic opportunities. Against this background, this study explores the current state of eco-innovation in Nigeria by analysing the different types of eco-innovation across sectors and key dimensions of the economy and how they are contributing to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The study employs a desktop research design, utilising secondary data from existing databases and reports from published academic articles, international organisations, and company websites. The examined companies were purposively selected on the basis of their mission, online visibility, and the profundity of their eco-innovation activities aimed at promoting sustainable development. Findings revealed that companies in Nigeria are eco-innovating across various industries. The energy sector leads in eco-innovation, with 31% of companies making significant strides toward sustainable development. The waste management sector follows closely at 25%, while the power sector ranks third with 19%. Other sectors collectively contribute 16% to eco-innovation activities, with hardware and digital eco-innovation accounting for the smallest share. These findings suggest that Nigeria is already engaged in eco-innovation and advancing toward sustainable development. However, there is currently no all-encompassing eco-innovation policy in Nigeria to incentivize companies. Hence, this study recommends that policymakers develop and implement robust policies to support eco-innovation in Nigeria to significantly promote sustainable development goals.
