Chapter Chapter 2 in Tackling Malnutrition in a Complex World, 2026, pp 5-49 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter examines how malnutrition is conceptualized in the existing literature, with an initial focus on the concept of the Double Burden of Malnutrition (DBM). The term refers to the coexistence of undernutrition and overnutrition within the same population across the life course, highlighting the interrelation between early-life undernutrition and the increased risk of overnutrition in adulthood. Subsequently, the chapter explores how malnutrition manifests across different target groups: individuals with low socioeconomic status, children, adolescents, autistic people, hospitalized patients, older adults, and employees, analyzing malnutrition expression within the Italian context.
