Secretary’s Closing Remarks

Bernard R. Hodgson

A chapter in Proceedings of the Ninth International Congress on Mathematical Education, 2004, pp 391-400 from Springer

Abstract: Conclusion This brings us to the conclusion of this session. At this stage the Executive Committee of the Commission wishes to pay tribute to a Japanese friend and colleague who has played a preeminent role in organization of ICME 9. I am sure many of you have been involved over the years in the organization of scientific meetings of various sizes: a few hundred participants, maybe up to a thousand. But I do not know if many were involved in the organization of a gathering of more than two thousand people, especially in an international setting. Cumulating the roles of President of the National Organizing Committee and that of Chair of the International Program Committee is truly a daunting task. The Executive Committee of ICMI was especially impressed by the skill and graciousness with which Professor Hiroshi Fujita has lead these committees, in particular the IPC of ICME 9, a committee appointed by the Executive Committee of ICMI, where efficiency and judgment combined with sensibility for cultural nuances are so important. I now invite Fujita san to come back on the dais. Please join us in expressing our warmest thanks to our splendid colleague.
