Chapter Chapter 2 in Human Resource Development in South Korea, 2020, pp 13-34 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Korea, devastated by Japan’s forced annexation and the Korean War, has achieved rapid economic growth, which is called the “Miracle on the Han River.” Behind the scenes were government-led economic development, selective industrial development, and human resource development to support it. With its entry into the global knowledge industry and competition, the national industrial development has now been transferred to a market-driven economy from government-led economy. In addition, rapid changes in population and society are making it difficult for government-led human resources development. This chapter looks at the NHRD of Korea from the past to the present. In more detail, we discuss its history, achievements, limitations, and challenges in terms of vocational education, vocational training, and lifelong education. Through these discussions, we would like to explore the nature and achievements of the NHRD in Korea and suggest future direction of its NHRD.
