Abstract: Abstract The fracture process simulation model of the gear tooth is built up by the finite element method. Through the computation of the root stress intensity factor and the fracture process simulation, the model mesh and the crack tip element are studied with the crack initiation and the crack propagation trajectory, the advances of the computational fracture mechanics are shown. A special crack tip element is used to simulate the feature of the crack tip stress singularity. The crack tip stress and displacement distributions can be accurately determined, and the stress intensity factor (SIF) and the strain energy release rate can be calculated accordingly. The SIFs are obtained from the nodal displacements of the singular elements by the displacement correlation technique (DCT) and displacement interpolation technique (DIT), or from J-integral results and the strain energy release rate, and the strain energy release rate can be obtained by using the virtual crack extension method. The maximum tangential stress criterion is used to predict the direction of crack advancement. An element remeshing procedure is used for simulating automatic crack propagation without user intervention.
