Zusammenfassung Die Diskussion um eine mögliche Unterscheidung von Soziologie und Mathematik – von soziologischer und mathematischer Beobachtung – und um eine mögliche Zirkularität dieser Unterscheidung wird vor dem Hintergrund historischer Einblicke in die Anfänge der Soziologie (Comte, Spencer, Simmel u.a.) dargestellt.
