Abstract:
Zusammenfassung In this paper we present a pedagogical strategy developed to work with students in a calculus course for Biology majors at UNESP, State University of São Paulo, Brazil. This proposal involves two trends in mathematics education: modeling and technology. Beginning on the first day of the course, we use computer technology to present students with issues regarding malaria and a system of linear differential equations. Students are introduced to some calculus concepts with the help of the professor and computer technology. We present the pedagogical proposal and use the notion of humans-with-media to emphasize the role of technology in a collective that discusses the modeling of malaria to understand how humans are infected.
