A chapter in Safety and Risk Modeling and Its Applications, 2011, pp 197-218 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The failure of many units or systems, such as components, parts, machines, can be generally classified into two kinds of failure modes: one is catastrophic failure in which units break down by some sudden external shocks; the other is degradation failure in which units fail to function due to the physical deterioration. There are a great number of such cases for this kind of competing failure modes in our real life.
