Chapter Chapter 1 in Warranty Data Collection and Analysis, 2011, pp 1-15 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Technological advances have resulted in new products appearing on the market at an ever increasing pace. In many instances, these new products are becoming more complex in response to the ever increasing demands of customers. In addition, customers look for assurance that an item purchased will perform satisfactorily. Warranty is the means through which manufacturers provide this assurance. Offering a warranty, however, leads to the additional costs associated with servicing of the warranty. These costs depend on several factors, the most important of which is the reliability of the product. Warranty data provide useful information for use in improving current operations and in designing new, more reliable products, both of which aid in reducing warranty costs. This chapter discusses how manufacturers can achieve this and gives an overview of the process.
