Unseen: three poems

Abstract:
I have spent over thirty years in mental health services, in Northern Ireland and South Africa, with multiple diagnoses imposed on me, including “borderline personality disorder”, “bipolar disorder”, “schizotypal personality disorder” and “schizoaffective disorder”. My “symptoms”, caused by multiple traumas, including institutional abuse, were “treated” with electroconvulsive therapy and multiple medications, including antipsychotics. I now run my own training and consultancy, bringing my lived and learned experiences to teach about the impact of stress, trauma and power inequalities on those needing help and those working in services. I also work two days a week for Participation and Practice of Rights (PPR), a human rights organisation advocating for a new Script for Mental Health. Calling for a move away from the individualised, medicalised approach, to one that offers people more hopeful narratives for making meaning of their suffering and experiences that don’t fit within what society deems “normal”. Here are three of my poems. Thank you for taking the time to read one or two.
