Microeconomic Linkages Between Food, Energy, and Land Security: Insights From Ethiopia

Abstract: Rural households in low‐income countries face food and energy insecurity. This study examines how land tenure security shapes these interlinked outcomes in southern Ethiopia. We introduce the Household Energy Insecurity Access Scale (HEIAS), adapted from experience‐based food security indicators, to measure energy security. Using survey data from 803 households and a multiple mediation model, we find a direct positive effect of land tenure security on energy security and an indirect effect on food security, which improves through enset cultivation and livestock ownership. HEIAS offers a practical tool to quantify household energy security that can support monitoring, targeting, and policy evaluation.
