Trade unions at the workplace

William Brown

Industrial Relations Journal, 2015, vol. 46, issue 1, 7-11

Abstract: The early research work of Lord McCarthy was innovative in terms of both method and findings. His analysis of the closed shop revealed its extent and growth to be far greater than then thought. His subsequent analysis of the role of shop stewards had a profound effect on the 1968 Report of the Royal Commission on Trade Unions and Employer Associations. It also pioneered the use of surveys in industrial relations research.
