Abstract: The purpose of our study is to estimate the relationship between a New York State census tract''s exposure to toxic industrial pollutants and various socioeconomic variables. Our measure of exposure takes into account not only the distance between each pollution source – census tract pair, but ours is the first such study to use a measure that also incorporates meteorological conditions, including wind direction, wind speed, and air temperature. The measure is based upon a model of air pollution dispersal, the Gaussian Plume Model (GPM). We find that urban areas with large African American, working-aged populations, and those with relatively high education levels but low incomes experience the greatest levels of exposure to industrial pollution.
