Holistic Marketing Management Journal, 2021, vol. 11, issue 1, 61-100

Abstract: A series of significant conversations in the nineties were brought to an end thanks to the Symposium “The Economy of Ideas and Sustainable development”, organized at the Romanian Parliament House, on May 16, 2000 by the scientific association Romanian Distribution Committee, within the special context of highlighting the importance of better understanding that the society is at the heart of sustainable development and adaptation of business, being also approached significant aspects with regard to ebusiness and its subset e-commerce. Some of these aspects has been approached by Louis Guelette, IBM Vice President, Distribution on the occasion of the 24th International Congress of A.I.D.A. Brussels, organized in Bucharest, at Athénée Palace Hilton, on 18- 19 May 1998, by the Romanian Distribution Committee. Without doubt, today’s business is accelerated by both the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, 2015), and the impact of the new coronavirus crisis, and we are witnessing the emergence of new business models struggling to better understand the rising sustainability concerns and the new consumers’ perspective, including the shifting consumers’ expectations and behavior, and retailers’ challenge of considering the accelerated evolutions in e-commerce, AI, and mobile technology, one hand and continuously evolving impact on e-commerce of the disruptive technologies. And there is clear evidence concerning the sustainability as a strategic priority, and the e-commerce contribution in sustainable development, under the pressure of approaching value through new and improved customer experience.
