Seasonal and Regional Differences in Agricultural Supply Response in Benin

Maarten Janssen and Dirk Perthel

European Review of Agricultural Economics, 1990, vol. 17, issue 4, 407-20

Abstract: This paper provides an empirical analysis of the question whether high market prices stimulate the supply of food crops in the Atlantique province in the Republic of Benin. There are two growing seasons. The (tentative) results are as follows. (1) There is a marked difference between the supply decisions in the the two seasons. First season's production is primarily devoted to food security of the peasant's family, while the second season's production is directed towards "cash crops." (2) The results with respect to maize depend on the presence of a bituminous road in a district. In districts along a bituminous road in a district. In districts along a bituminous road we find a mild positive price elasticity of maize production, whereas this elasticity is negative for the other districts.
