Abstract:
This article analyzes the welfare effects of accession to the EC on the Spanish hog market. Using a quarterly econometric model, the welfare consequences of accession are derived for the period 1986 to 1990. Within the context of the Spanish hog market. welfare measures indicate that direct gains from the entry into the EC exceed the direct losses. However, losses to hog producers were relatively large and government compensation has been limited. Programs designed to increase domestic productivity and stimulate Spanish exports would likely reduce the effects of accession on the Spanish hog producer. Copyright 1992 by Oxford University Press.
