Abstract: This article is a simple presentation of data on changes in the size distribution of enterprises in the EU food and drink manufacturing sector from 1980 to 1992. The data were collected, with some difficulty, from national statistical offices of the member states and “manipulated” to make them as comparable as possible. Analysis of the observed changes are beyond the scope of this article, but the various pressures that we expected to promote concentration in the industry and lead to a convergence of food industry structures across Europe appear to have had little impact during the 1980s. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
