Abstract:
Abstract Louisiana is located in the West South Central region of the United States and had a population of 4.3 million people in 2006, making it the twenty-sixth least populous state. The state’s population decreased by 181,208 people from 2000 to 2006. From 2005 to 2006 the state’s population declined by 2.3%. Louisiana’s population is projected to increase, however, to 4.8 million by 2025. This 0.6% projected annual growth rate compares to the national average of 0.8%. Per capita personal income in Louisiana was $31,369 in 2006, up significantly from $24,781 in 2005. For 2006, this was $5,260 below the national average and the eleventh lowest in the country. Louisiana’s per capita income grew at an average annual rate of 5.2% from 2000 to 2006, compared to 3.5% nationally.
