Chapter 11 in The New Luxury Experience, 2019, pp 211-228 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In the spirit of many, luxury and sustainable development are especially opposed. Indeed, where sustainable development often advocates sobriety and simplicity, luxury refers rather to the image of abundance and complexity. Yet, the world of luxury is not necessarily antithetical to that of sustainable development. Looking more closely, luxury is also (and perhaps above all) quality products that are timeless, transmittable, and sustainable over time and developed from know-how excellence. In a way, luxury is, therefore, an alternative to the logic of disposable and programmed obsolescence, which is in contrast to the overconsumption that characterizes our societies and their ecological problems. There are bridges between sustainable development and luxury. To produce additional bridges in a more sustainable way, one can draw inspiration from luxury and its ability to create quality products that are resistant and elegant but functional. And luxury can also be enriched with sustainable development ideas to produce better-rationalized costs, secure supplies, and take advantage of the circular economy.
