Chapter 23 in Social Entrepreneurship and Corporate Social Responsibility, 2020, pp 361-372 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The recent years have witnessed an increased interest in the relationship between spirituality and entrepreneurship (Godwin, Neck, & D’Intino, Journal of Management, Spirituality & Religion 13(1):1–17, 2016). This chapter explores the role of spirituality in social entrepreneurship illustrated through a case study of Amrita SeRVe, a nonprofit organization nestled in the backwaters of Kerala, India. Vibrating with spiritual dynamism and a deep sense of love and concern for others Amrita SeRVe thrives under a woman leader touching the lives of thousands. The chapter begins with an investigation into the meaning of spirituality and the distinguishing characteristics of women’s spirituality. The concepts are further elaborated by a conceptual model developed through a qualitative pilot research explaining the outcome of spirituality as a drive to the realization of empowerment for women leaders and the value of love in the process. My experiential understanding of working at Amrita SeRVe under the leadership of a spiritual woman resonates deeply with the conceptual model. The chapter delves into the conundrums of realizing meaning and purpose at one’s work environment, the value of love as the core principle of an organization, and its practical implications for social change.
