Abstract:
Abstract This chapter presents some case studies of selected blue chip companies in Kenya. The companies are major players in the economies of East Africa. They were selected for study because they are some of the most active companies in Kenya in corporate social responsibility (CSR). Many companies in Kenya, including some considered here, have formed foundations to help them carry out CSR activities. It is well known that most organizations that create foundations do so with two primary goals: to help society by addressing social problems and needs and to engage their companies in a joint endeavor built on shared values and a desire to leave a legacy. Key theories of CSR and relevant literature review were consulted. This chapter is thus largely based on desk research but also benefited from limited interviews with some of the top managers in each of the companies discussed here. The case studies appear to suggest that the companies have embraced CSR because of changing dynamics and because there is realization that pursuing the profit motive without regard to societal issues will not bring about desired results in the long run. One company in particular was almost forced into CSR by the press and NGOs signifying that the reasons for engagement in CSR may be externally generated. Many companies start from within and then consider external forces.
