Abstract:
Abstract A major part of the discussion concerned the relevance of export base models for analysing economic development based on natural resources and whether these resources had decreased in importance as was argued in the paper. The role of migration policy for the applicability of the export base theory and the importance of agglomerations for development were also touched upon. The rate at which regions would deplete local nonrenewable natural resource deposits in the future was compared with previous experience and the consequences of local depletion as well as the probability of global depletion were discussed. This session was chaired by Harold Brookfield.
