Chapter 2 in Managing Business Family Dynasties, 2021, pp 7-18 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter presents the central theoretical distinctions that help to describe and explain the special nature and dynamics of dynastic business families. The aim is to understand how such large numbers of shareholders have come to exist in family businesses. Interestingly, three logics of social cohesion can be observed in such large business families: firstly, the classic family logic; secondly, the logic of formal organisations and, thirdly, the logic of widely ramified family networks. Understanding these three types and stages of the development of business families not only offers a new theoretical model but also helps the members—and, above all, the representatives and committee members of these families—to find appropriate answers to their everyday challenges. What these challenges are and how to respond to them in practice are illustrated in the following sections.
