Chapter Chapter 16 in Platform Business Models, 2021, pp 217-241 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Tally was founded as an accounting software product way in the late 1980s, when computers were still gaining ground in offices and business establishments. Over the years, Tally had become synonymous with computerized accounting in India, catering to millions of small and medium businesses in India. Over the years, Tally has grown from a boxed product to an ERP platform (Tally ERP.9) and subsequently to taking on a larger role in the ecosystem (TallyPrime) in the connected world. As the market matures and the economics weans away from winner-takes-all dynamics, Tally has repositioned itself to sustain its position. This case traces the evolution of Tally through the three eras and its role as ecosystem enablers. The case helps understand the differences in the business models of products, platforms, and ecosystem enablers.
